Fire Lookout “South Mt. Hawkins” on opening day in Sept 1999. Tragically, this tower was destroyed by fire during the “Curve Fire” on September 1st, 2002.
An effort was underway to rebuild the South Mt. Hawkins tower. However, due to the poor (and worsening) condition of the road to the lookout the direction of the project has changed. As of 2008 the ANFFLA is searching for another peak in the Angeles National Forest on which to rebuild a fire lookout tower. The funds that were originally raised for rebuilding South Mt. Hawkins will be applied to this new project.
