South Mount Hawkins
Fire Lookout “South Mt. Hawkins” on opening day in Sept 1999. Tragically, this tower was destroyed by fire during the “Curve Fire” on September 1st, 2002.
An effort was underway to rebuild the South Mt. Hawkins tower. However, due to the poor (and worsening) condition of the road to the lookout the direction of the project has changed. ANFFLA is searching for another peak in the Angeles National Forest on which to rebuild a fire lookout tower after the rebuild of the Vetter Mountain Lookout is complete.
Warm Springs
The Warm Springs Lookout cab was lost during the Ruby Ridge Fire of 1987. All that remains is the metal tower platform and a spectacular view from 4000′. While Warm Springs will not be the subject of our next restoration project, perhaps a future restoration project will bring this tower back to life.
